Classes

The Billie Barry Stage School continues to be attuned to the needs of an ever-changing profession and continues to adapt accordingly. Still, it also takes a practical and balanced approach that allows students of all abilities to enjoy themselves and be educated without false expectations or demands being placed upon them. Thus, whether students who attend after school benefit from the exercise, recreation and enjoyment of classes, or they excel and have special talent that is nurtured and honed, all who attend are given the attention they deserve.

The Billie Barry Stage School is a meeting place where students aged 3 to 20 can socialise together while learning a variety of performing art forms in a professional and disciplined environment.

Dance Classes

The School runs daily with hourly classes based on age and ability. We teach a variety of disciplines including:

Dance
  • Modern Jazz Dance
  • Street Jazz
  • Tap Dance (Broadway Style)
  • Funky Rhythm Tap
  • Acappella Tap
  • Theatrical Dance
  • Commercial Style Dance
Musical Theatre
Singing
Teaching of technique for performance on the professional stage
Drama Workshops

Classes commence with a jazz based warm-up to exercise and tone every part of the body while working on flexibility and technique.

We structure our classes so that there is continuity from term to term and from year to year. Students are regularly assessed and will always be placed in a class where they can reach their full potential and gain a real sense of accomplishment.

We regularly invite parents to attend end of term performance days. These are invaluable, as students get to perform their work in front of a live audience. Parents enjoy this opportunity to see how their children are progressing.

The most exciting opportunity for all of our students is the thrill of appearing in our week long production in the prestigious Gaiety Theatre Dublin. This is always a lavish, spectacularly costumed, thoroughly professional production with a live orchestra and is loved by audiences young and old.

New Enrolments

To begin, all new students enrol on a 4 weeks' trial basis. In the case of younger children, this is to assess whether the child's concentration skills are developed enough to participate fully in the class. It also gives the child the opportunity to see if they will enjoy the experience.

With regard to older children, the four weeks gives an opportunity on both sides to assess suitability as enjoyment of classes is of the utmost importance.

Choirs

Choirs

Children who wish to join a choir must already be a member of the school. They will undertake a short audition after which those deemed to possess potential as well as ability will be accepted.

At present there are four choirs of different age groups who attend one class every week lasting an hour. These are held on Saturday mornings and Monday evenings.

Classes are structured around the fundamentals of:

The children's singing of songs benefits from the work they do, as they gain experience in singing counter melodies and in harmony.

The work in the class is designed to improve all round singing ability and musical knowledge rather than simply learning songs.

At the end of term the choirs perform their repertoire to the parents, family and friends.

Summer Theatre School

Summer Theatre School

The highly successful Summer Theatre School, which is for existing Billie Barry Stage School students only, is an intensive but immensely enjoyable course. It is of great value to all pupils, as in attending daily classes a very high standard can be achieved. The students' skills are perfected and personalities developed, thereby instilling confidence.

It is a great opportunity for pupils to mix, train and make friends with other pupils they may not necessarily be with throughout the year. Both Junior and Senior groups will work on an exciting programme of various dance styles, musical excerpts and solo and choral singing with a view to performance on the final day of the three week course.

These end of Summer School Showcases are thoroughly enjoyed by the students and audiences alike. It has become a tradition to run this showcase day in aid of a designated children's charity. This has been done very successfully for the past number of years for "To Russia With Love".
